Bernard “Peter” Sledge born on September 18,1937 in Gilbertown, Alabama passed
away peacefully in his home on March 25, 2026. He was 88 years young. Peter was a
man whose presence was felt strongly in the hearts of those who knew him and were
graced to be in his company.
The youngest child of Arthur and Amie Lancaster Sledge, Peter was a source of
strength and warmth. Predeceased by his parents and loving brothers: Maynard,
Nimrod and John Thomas (Janks) Sledge, Sisters: LillieMae McGee,
Joanna Nicholson Bradley, Alice Campbell and Alma Poole. Peter cherished the family
bonds that helped shape his character and life. He is survived by his sisters:
Sena Sims and Ruth Meachem who along side her husband Sherman and a plethora of
nieces, nephews, cousins and friends continue the legacy of love and resilience that is
characteristic of the Sledge Family. Peter’s marriage to Claudette was one of enduring
love and teamwork that lasted until her passing in 2004.
As a member of the Teamsters Union, Peter spent his career working on the loading
docks at Yellow Freight. His work ethic was as meticulous as his wardrobe. He was
known to dress with style and his distinguished good looks were often compared to
those of Actor, Morgan Freeman.
In his down time, Peter found joy in the simple pleasures of gardening. The beauty of
his yard reflected the care and dedication he brought to everything he did. His yard was
a source of pride for the entire neighborhood.
Peter’s legacy will live on in the hearts of surviving family and friends who he deeply
touched with his gentle spirit, soft spoken words and big heart.
Rest well, Peter your labors are over, your journey is completed.
