Obituary
Charles Wendell Winston, Jr. was born January 6, 1947 in Memphis, Tennessee to Viola and Charles Winston Sr. Shortly after birth, Viola brought Charles to Oakland, CA where he grew up around aunts, uncles and cousins. He played ball where ever he could. Specifically playing in the streets of Brookfield Village from day into night and many times until the street lights came on. This is where his love of sports began.
Charles attended Castlemont High School where he was very popular and well respected. He was also one of the best second basemen that played in the OAL (Oakland Athletics League). After Charles graduated high school in 1964, he served in the Air Force where he acquired many skills that he used in future government jobs i.e., US Post office and Naval Supply Center. Charles found his niche and landed a career position at the Port of SFO and later Port of Oakland as a longshoreman.
In October 1970 Charles met and married Linda Stewart. From this union four children were born: Sharifa, Charles III, Tabitha and Rashida. Linda was called home early in her walk of life. With work slow in Oakland, Charles relocated to Long Beach in 1984 to continue his career. Charles accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and found a church home. While in Long Beach Charles met Monra Jordan and they were happily married on December 19, 2008. Monra was a devoted wife and a loving care giver.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents Viola and Charles Winston, Sr.
Leaving to cherish his precious memories is his wife Monra Winston. Celebrating the greatest moments in his life are his sister and brother in-law June and Carnell Hill of Oakland, CA; four children: Sharifa, Charles III, Tabitha and Rashida all of Oakland, CA; two nieces: Carmen Thrower of Brentwood, CA and Corrin Hill of Oakland, CA; great-nephew, Tavio Thrower; three step-sons: Turhon and Jermaine of Las Vegas, NV and Raymon;10grandchildren: TreShaun, Cheyenne, Parris, Kamauri, Kamaya, Kalynn, Ry'ann, Camryn, Jermaine, Courvoisiet and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
