Obituary
Christopher C. McDaniel began his journey in life on Thursday, May 25, 1922, in the small town of Haskell, Oklahoma. He was one of seven children born from the marriage of Dennis McDaniel and Channie Harmon. As the eldest, he assisted in the care of his younger sisters and brothers, creating a bond that lasted a lifetime.
Christopher's academic education began at Cloud Creek Elementary School and continued at Phyllis Wheatley High School. While attending school, he met Eva Mae Rentie from Boynton, a neighboring town in Oklahoma. After they both graduated, they continued to communicate. Christopher enlisted in the United States Army, while Eva gained employment at Camp Gruber Army Training Camp in Oklahoma.
On September 30, 1943 they were married, and from this union their daughter Christina was born. After the military, Christopher was employed at Bethlehem Steel in Oklahoma. In 1945, came an opportunity to relocated to a new job at the United States Naval Drydocks, on Terminal Island, in San Pedro, California. Christopher left Oklahoma and established residency in Long Beach, and then sent for his family. Here he began his work for the military as a dry-dock laborer, various positions followed, from sandblaster, ordinance foreman, to mechanical engineering technician. During this time he transferred from San Pedro, to the U.S. Naval Station in Long Beach, and finally retiring from the U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot in Seal Beach after thirty-four years of service.
Although retired, Christopher remained active; and he was only 55. He occupied himself with one of his favorite pastimes.... cars. He loved to drive them, he loved to make them shine. After a while, he started his own business, detailing cars. He was the best. Soon he had a clientele that kept him busy. It wasn't a job to him, it was his hobby.
Christopher was also involved in the church. He accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age and was baptized at Cloud Creek Baptist Church in Oklahoma. Once the family moved to Long Beach, they were in search of a new church home. Initially they attended services at Saint Mark Baptist Church before joining Second Baptist Church, now known as Christ Second Baptist Church. The minister at that time was Rev. H.B. Charles. In the early 1950's, the family purchased a new home in Compton, California but later returning to Long Beach in the 60's where they had been active in the church since 1945. Throughout the years he was not only on the Deacon Board, but also a Director of the Gospel Chorus, Assistant Director to the Senior Choir and the Men's Chorus. He was a very devoted member, and a servant of God.
On Sunday, December 11, 2016.... "His Lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." (Matthew 25:23)
Now, he is with us in spirit, but cherishing the memories are his daughter Christina Tyson, grandson Steven M. Tyson, his sister Lovetta Smith of Kansas City, Missouri, brothers Harold McDaniel of Harbor City, California, and Olathus McDaniel of Sioux City, Iowa. Sister-in-law Lois McDaniel of Harbor City, California, generations of nieces and nephews, and a family of friends that shared his love.
