This is my story; this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long…
Deacon Dan James Washington was born on February 5, 1932 in Wagoner, Oklahoma to the late Deacon George (Whetis) Washington and Katie Wells–Washington. He attended school at Lincoln High School in Wagoner, Oklahoma.
Dan accepted Christ at an early age and joined in membership at the Union Baptist Church, in Wagoner, Oklahoma under the pastoral leadership of Rev. J. E Bridgett. Dan lived in Wichita, Kansas prior to joining the military, U.S. Army in 1950 in Ft. Reilly, Kansas. During his military tenure, he served in the Korean War. Dan was honorably discharged in 1953 at Camp Chaffe, Arkansas. He met and married the love of his life, Miss. Vivian Mae Vann on Sept 2, 1955. At that time, they lived and worked in Wichita, Kansas. In pursuit of a better life and better job opportunities, Dan made the decision to travel westward. He moved to Long Beach, California in 1956 and his lovely bride followed in 1957. Dan immediately sought for a good place to go to church. They joined Christ Second Baptist Church of Long Beach, California under the pastoral leadership of the late Rev. Herman Gore, Sr. Dan served faithfully and gladly as a Deacon, altar worker, and a servant to the pastor. He was also very active in Sunday School. Dan loved the Lord and thoroughly enjoyed serving his pastor.
Dan became gainfully employed by the City of Long Beach, working for the Sanitation Department in several capacities, and mainly as a truck driver. He retired from the City of Long Beach after 40 years of service. Dan was a family man; he truly loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. At a very pivotal time in their lives, Dan and his wife made the profound decision to legally adopt 6 of their grandchildren. His greatest desire was that they come to know and serve the Lord! Dan loved the Lord; he loved the Word of God. In June of 2007, Dan placed his membership with Prevailing In Christ Ministries under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Michael J. Ealey. Dan loved his church family, and just loved being at church. He was passionate about serving, and he "loved him some Pastor Ealey!" They shared a very unique and unusual relationship. Dan honored God with his life. He loved serving God and serving his pastors. Dan had a refreshing sense of humor, was loved by all who knew him, and enjoyed sharing the wisdom of God with whomever would listen.
