Obituary

Ethel Mae Hollie Dilworth was born on November 29, 1934, in Saluda, South Carolina, to the union of Willie and Arbell Gilliam. She was sixth of nine children. She accepted Christ at an early age. She is preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, and three brothers. During the early 1940s, the Gilliam Family migrated to Washington, D.C. Mother Dilworth received a formal public school education, and attended Cardozo High School. Prior to her marriage in the late 1940s, she lived in Manhattan, New York City and worked for Macy's Store where she sold hats and gloves. In June 1951, she married Leon Edward Hollie who was serving in the United States Army. In 1952, they arrived in the city of Long Beach where her husband was stationed in San Pedro at Fort MacArthur. They were married for 29 lively years. From that union, Lydia (1956) and Robert (1962) Hollie were born. Mother Dilworth attended Second Baptist of Los Angeles under the leadership of Rev. Dr. J. Raymond Henderson. By the late 1970s, she joined St. John Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Ralph J. Mosby, and remained a faithful member until the Lord called her home. In August 1975, Mother Dilworth married George Murry Dilworth. They were married for 26 enjoyable years. In the 60s, 70s, and 90s, Mother Dilworth continued her education and was certified in IBM keypunch, electronic accounting machines, computer operations, ambulatory care, and transition management. Her work history spanned 60 years, including as a domestic, a supervisor with Xerox Corporation, and a distinguished 28-year career serving in highly specialized duties with Los Angeles County, notably with Harbor General-UCLA Medical Center. Mother Dilworth was known for her classy demeanor and exceptionally stylish attire, delicious meals and desserts, her smile and positive outlook and no nonsense approach to life, strength, and wisdom. Mother Dilworth always encouraged the best in others. On a radiant Monday morning, Mother Dilworth's earthly life came to a peaceful close. With her family and nurses by her side, our Lord escorted Mother Dilworth to her Heavenly home. Treasuring her memory are Mother Dilworth leaves behind her surviving sister of the Gilliam Family, Dorothy Ann Ballard of Pomona, CA; two children, Lydia A. Hollie, J.D/MAED, and Robert L. Hollie, Sr.; ten grandchildren: Robert L Hollie, Jr. (deceased), Christopher Deon Hollie, Leon Demetri Hollie, Rodney Deon Hollie, Brandon Hollie, Reasean Hollie, LaRob Hollie, Dieanna Hollie-Simpson of Rialto, CA, Renae Hollie, and Shanette Hollie; 15 great-grandchildren: Brittany Randolph and Bryan Hollie, Imani, Christian, and Gabriel Hollie, Mylese, LaMya, and Dylan Hollie, Milan Hollie, Amiyah Berry Hollie and Robert L. Hollie III, Azzaam Stallsworth, Amirr Hollie, Rayden and Robbie Hollie, Great-Great niece Jalayne Chapman and son, Great-Great-Great nephew Jeremiah Chapman, and a host of family and friends from across the United States, and friendships and acquaintances among the Long Beach community and Southern California spanning 69 years.
