IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joseph James
Scott
October 5, 1937 – January 1, 2021
Joseph James Scott was born on October 5, 1937. While the New Year was just beginning, Joseph joined his Heavenly family on the 1 st of January 2021. He was born in Ochlocknee, Georgia, which in 1937 had a population of less than 500. His parents were the late Henry L. Scott and Queen L. Saulsberry.
1937 was an eventful year. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the president, the Golden Gate Bridge opened, Zora Neale Hurston published her first book, and catcher Josh Gibson of the Negro League's Homestead Grays hit a ball 580 feet in Yankee Stadium. Joseph lived a wonderful life. He attended Centennial High School in Compton, California (CA), loved the Lord and made going to church a priority. On his Christian walk, Joe joined Palm Lane Church of God in Christ, in Los Angeles, CA. While there he grew in the Lord and was ordained as a Deacon. God also planted a seed at that time. This is where he first met the love of his life, Clementine "Tina" Daniel.
Joe worked for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. During his employment, he was drafted into the military and was inducted into the United States Army. During his stint in the Army, he served as a Medic from 1961 to 1963. Upon being honorably discharged from the service, Joe returned to work for Goodyear, returned to Palm Lane Church and rekindled his relationship with Miss Daniel. She became his soulmate.
Joe and Tina were married in 1964. This union was blessed with two wonderful and handsome sons, Roderic Scott of Anaheim and Fred Scott of Carson, CA. Joe, Tina, and the boys eventually settled in Carson, CA. Joe continued to advance his career by accepting a position with the United States Postal Service. He was a highly respected and beloved Mail Carrier for the City of Bellflower, CA. Joe loved his mail route and his customers loved him. He served this community for 21 years before retirement. All of his customers hated to see him go. At his passing he was still receiving Christmas Cards from some of his favorite families. Joe could not sit still for too long and came out of retirement. For 12 years he worked for Cabe Toyota in Long Beach, CA as a Courtesy Driver.
Along his spiritual path, Joe and his family joined Angelus Temple Church of the Foursquare Gospel, located in Los Angeles, CA. During his 30 years of membership, Joe served on the Communion Board. In God's divine order, he and Tina were ordained Elders enabling them to minister to hundreds of congregants. Later in life, Joe and the family joined Christian Life Church in Long Beach, CA. While there, Joe attended and loved Sunday School. He also served as an usher until his health began to fail him.
Joe was the ultimate conversationalist. He never met a stranger. His care and compassion for others was exemplified in everything he did. He loved reading his Bible, prayer time and talking to people about the Lord. Joe also loved to listen to Gospel music. He loved working in his yard, and he loved his cars. His favorite car was his 1966 black and yellow Chevy, Caprice. Joe was great inside the house as well. He would wash dishes for Tina and sneak peanuts and peppermints every day. Joe traveled quite a bit with the family. They made trips together to Yellowstone National Park, Utah, Alabama, New York, Hawaii, Washington DC, the island of Australia, and enjoyed cruises to the Caribbean. His favorite vacation spot was Palm Springs, CA.
Left with loving memories of Joe are his beloved wife Tina, his two sisters, Rashawn Walker of Cleveland, OH, Dr. Madeline Manning Mims of Tulsa, OK, a brother, Robert Jackson of Gulfport, MS. He also leaves behind his two sons Roderic and Fred, three grandchildren, Travis Brandon Scott, Asianna Samantha Scott, and Michael Anthony Scott, one great-grandson, Christopher Scott. And his "little sister, Deborah Crain-Kemp of Washington, DC. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, his church family, and a multitude of friends also mourn the loss of Joe and will forever cherish memories of him.
