Our Mom, Mae Helen Vaughn was born October 20, 1934 in Franklinton, Louisiana to Charlie and Julia McKay. She spent her childhood and early adulthood in Louisiana. While residing in Louisiana she gave birth to two sons, Jeffrey and Lionel .
In 1962, she moved to California to provide a better life for her and her sons. That next year she gave birth to a daughter, Sharon. Four years later she met and later married Wilford Vaughn. From this union two daughters were born, Lynetta and Cynthia.
Early in life our mother was taught to have a strong belief in God. Shortly after arriving in California she joined Christ Second Baptist Church, in Long Beach, where she accepted the Lord as her personal savior. She later joined Greater Light Apostolic Church, also in Long Beach. She quickly became active in the church serving on many auxiliaries such as: Sunday school teaching, ushering and youth leader. Here she realized she had a gift for working with children. She soon started working at Sander's Teeny Tiny Preschool. While working there, she saw countless number of parents that were looking for childcare for their babies under the age of two. Since they were being turned away, she decided to open her own in- home daycare center. She provided superb childcare for the children and support to the parents by giving them comfort, God centered counseling, and reassurance to meet the challenges of parenting and life for over 20 years.
Intercessory prayer was a large part of our mom's life. She formed a powerful prayer alliance with her close friend Marie Hadley. This dynamic duo for Christ prayed for hundreds of people, no request was too big or too small. In 1986, she moved her church home to The Lord's Church, in Bellflower where she once again became very active. She worked in several ministries; the choir, helping in the food ministry , Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and being a member of the Sisters of Zion. She also led the Prayer Team in intercessory prayer in and outside of the church. She and her prayer team members would receive phone calls and messages from various members and each week they would come together to use the power of prayer against the works of the enemy. She continued her work in the church until 2008.
Family was everything to our mom. Her kids, grandkids and great-grand kids were her pride and joy. She had a unique relationship with each one of us. There wasn't anything she would not do for her family. Her love reached beyond our immediate family. With her nurturing spirit, she took in and cared for other family members and friends as if they were her own.
On October 14, 2014, our beloved mother was called home to receive her eternal reward. She was preceded in death by her daughter Sharon in 2012. Those who remain to cherish her memory and to be inspired by the life she lived are: her children Jeffrey, Lionel, Lynetta (David), and Cynthia; Son-in-law Demetrius; granddaughters Toccara, Breyon, Chiara, Taelor, Courtney, Erica and grandson Bryson; great granddaughters Jordyn, Jaelyn, Brielle and Bre'lyn and great grandson Skyler; former husband Wilford Vaughn, former daughter-in-law Teresa Garrett and grand dog Chloe Chanel; Also her sister Marie Taylor, and brother Johnny McKay and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
