Obituary
Dr. Mark Osei Owusu, PhD, JD, MPA
Mark Osei Owusu was born September 21, 1946 in Ghana to Chief Osei Owusu and Elizabeth Empeh. At the age of 18, he joined the Ghana Armed Forces (Army) and after graduating from boot-camp/training, he was sent to the Congo for about 3 years. Upon his return from the Congo and subsequent discharge from the army, Mark Osei Owusu travelled to the United States in the early 70's.
Upon arrival in the US, Mark immediately started work on his bachelor's degree at California State University Long Beach. He graduated with a BA-Political Science in 1978, completed a second Bachelor's in Criminal Justice, and went on to da a Master of Public Administration degree, all at Cal-State Long Beach. Mark's passion for African Traditional Religions led him to pursue a PhD in Religious Science at the institute of religious Studies. Also passionate about the legal system in the United States and how the law had often been interpreted to the disadvantage of African-Americans, mark decided to register for a Juris Doctor degree of Law at Abraham Lincoln University, School of Law, in Los Angeles, CA, which he completed in January 2004.
Mark worked with the US Department of State for over two decades. He also held a number of public service positions in Long Beach and Los Angeles, including teaching. He was an avid supporter of decentralization and often spoke at functions to promote that course in Ghana and other African countries. Mark strongly believed that Ghanaians deserved more than the leadership had to offer; however, he was unable to launch his political career for medical reasons.
Mark passed away on April 5th , 2014 after a long period of illness. Mark is survived by the wife Magdalene Nsor; 7 children Dr. Vincent Owusu Van Empeh, PhD, Salem International University, Mr. Jerry Kweku Osei Owusu, World Bank, Washington, DC, Nana Yaw Osei Owusu, Manager in Fresno, CA, Princes Sewah Osei Owusu, Victoria Osei Owusu, Lisa Osei Owusu, Melody Osei Owusu and 4 grandchildren Nana Osei Agyeman, Jennifer, Maureen and Alice.
