Obituary

Rubin Powell was born to the union of the late Simon and Mittie Powell on February 7, 1923 in Oakhurst, Texas. He was the middle child of three children, a sister Ethel Hunter and brother L.V. Powell, Sr. that preceded him in death. Rubin accepted Christ at an early age and rededicated his life to Christ as an adult. Rubin served on the Usher, Trustee and Deacon Board at Greater Harvest Church of God in Christ.
He  loved the Lord,  and was faithful in attending church services in his GQ sharp suits and Stacy Adam shoes.  He worshipped the Lord with uplifted hands, dancing, singing and praising God. He would "roll" to the various church services like the Good Friday Service and the Holy Convocations with Alice Faye his road buddy! He also enjoyed listening to anointed  Gospel Music.  One of his favorite songs was "Mary Did You Know" by Vickie Winans.
Rubin (Pistol) went to work early in life to assist his mother Mittie. After high school, Rubin served in the United States Army during a time of war from 1943 to 1946. In May of 1946, Rubin married Almeda Burnett, who preceded him in death, and to this union five children were born.

Rubin and Almeda moved to Long Beach, CA in 1951 seeking a better life for themselves and their children. Once in Long Beach, he found work with Rockwell International, where he worked as a Heavy Equipment Fork Lift Operator from 1951 to 1986. Rubin prided himself for handling parts and equipment for the Space Shuttle.

Rubin really enjoyed his life after his retirement. He loved watching baseball, especially those Dodgers, and he assisted in coaching Little League Baseball. Rubin won trophies for his dominoes skills, which he loved to play. Rubin was always on the go for family, friends and members of the church. Rubin loved eating out at the buffet styled restaurants. Rubin was a Grandfatherly, Fatherly and Uncle Figure to a host of people. Rubin loved being around family and friends enjoying one another with laughter. Rubin without a doubt would say the Lord had blessed him with a wonderful life that ended on Monday, December 19th, 2016.

Rubin leaves to cherish his loving memories his wife Doris Stinson Powell; sister Ethel Hunter; five children Evelyn Joyce Powell, Glenda Faye Powell, Monica Jane Powell, Ricky Powell, Sr. and Jacqueline (Jackie) Powell; eight grandchildren Andre Williams, James Ward, Jr., Samonie Sanders, Amanda Powell, Anthony Ward, Theodore Ward, Ricky Powell, Jr. and Justin Winston; twelve great grandchildren; beloved niece Alice Faye Peoples; cousin Hondo; the Stinson Family; the Greater Harvest Church Family and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
