Obituary
Ruby Ann Dotson was born on June 29, 1946 in Decatur, Mississippi to the proud parents of Claudie and Pearlie Ann Brown. She was the third of seven children who attended C.H. Boler High School in Decatur, MS and excelled as the president of her class. Upon graduating, Ruby began a college career at Alcorn A&M University. After near completion of a B.S. in Consumer Education, Ruby followed her oldest sister, Mary Brown Johnson, to Long Beach, CA. Due to her involvement in many civic activities during her earlier years of residence within the city, Ruby was known by some as "Ms. Long Beach."
Ruby began her walk with the Lord in Nov. of 1971, at the age of 25 and became a devout disciple who excitedly shared the plan of salvation to anyone willing to listen. She continued her missionary work in Al where her church family and pastor depended upon her.
She married Mayfield Dotson, (who preceded her in death in 2005) and to this union three children were born. Ruby was known to many as someone who had a natural ability to care for others and her family. She was also known as a "Nomad," moving herself and her children to exciting new places, but ultimately, she returned time and again to Long Beach, CA, within close proximity of her father.
Ruby retired from the Boeing Company after 15 years of service and moved to Alabama, where she was connected with her prior classmates in Mississippi and continued to coordinate various activities for her class. She frequently participated in hobbies such as: playing computer games, sewing, quilting, candle making, sharing quilts with loved ones and friends. Her greatest joy was at the sewing machine, creating or designing something with fabric. She was a superb seamstress who carried many occupations, including but not limited to, a Home Economics Representative and owner of Aunt Ruby's Tailoring Shop in Long Beach, CA.
Ruby was a certified foster mother and was known to many as a second mom. Her many nieces and nephews were quick to call her their "favorite aunty," as
she had a natural way with and love for children. One of her joys was seeing little girls with ribbon in their hair whom she could dress in lace and ruffles.
On September 5, 2013, God called Ruby home to rest. Her mother, father, and two brothers preceded her in death. She will be sorely missed by her remaining siblings: Mary Brown Johnson (Dan), Claudine Johnson (James), Katherine Mitchell (Darroll), Larry Brown (Sylvia), as well as her loving children, Todd L. Dotson, Tamatha Lawrence (Derek), Reubee Laudiea Parks (Terrelle); grandchildren, Jasmine Capel (Eric), Gabrielle Lawrence, Derek Lawrence II, Kenneth Terrelle Parks II, Harlymn Parks and countless cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives, associates and friends.
