The life of Viola Norman began on July 26, 1912, in Marianna, Arkan-sas with her birth to the late Charles and Hattie Johnson. She was the third born of nine children. Six of her siblings, Joe Johnson, Rosette Johnson, Charles Johnson, Isaiah Johnson, Steve Watkins, and Flora Lee Osler preceded her in death. She left school at an early age to help sup-port her family.
She married the late Howard Norman, Sr., in May of 1951 and six chil-dren were born to that union. Three of her children, Nathaniel and How-ard Norman and Ernest Willis, preceded her in death.
She earned a living by working as a maid for various families. She also chopped and picked cotton on the William Dortch Plantation. In the mid-1960s, she found herself homeless with four children to care for but she did not allow her circumstances to dampen her will to survive or lessen her faith in God.
Though she went through many struggles during her younger years, she was richly blessed by God. She believed strongly in the Bible, and de-spite only having a third grade education, she could quote numerous scriptures verbatim from memory. Her favorite scripture was John 3:16.
She relocated to Long Beach, California in 1973 where she joined The First Providence Missionary Baptist Church, and remained an active and enthusiastic member until her health started to fail.
Our beloved, Viola Norman fell asleep in Jesus on Monday, January 21, 2013. She is survived by her children, Hattie Ruth Bass and Elnora Co-sey, both of Long Beach, CA, William (Virginia) Norman, Poway, CA; and Delois Norman, Memphis, TN; 1 brother, Forrest Watkins, Detroit, MI; 3 stepdaughters, Dorothy Romes and Katherine Harshaw of North Little Rock, AR, Naomi (Richard) Herbert, Buckley, WA; 28 grandchil-dren, 40 great-grandchildren, 12 great- great-grandchildren, 6 great-great -great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
