Obituary

On September 3rd, 2014, God called Willie Lee Williams-Steward home. Willie Lee Williams-Steward born August 22, 1914 in Dallas, Texas to the late Willie Holmes and Lucy Jones.

She was the eldest of four children Fred Holmes, Walter P. Holmes and Kathryn Holmes (Farrar); who all preceded her in death. Losing her mother at an early age, Willie showed signs of a strong independent teenager. Because of her strength she became a hard working, dedicated, caring sister and then a mother of two children Mildred Berliner and Willie Larry Berliner who also preceded her in death.

Willie Lee Williams moved to Los Angeles, California in the early 1940's. In 1946 she began her career as a Window Display Coordinator with Lerner's Department Store.

In 1958 she joined in marriage to the late Reverend Parker Steward; soon after they both united at Progressive Community Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorage of T.W. Coggs, Jr. She was involved in many auxiliaries including Ministry Wives, Choir Member, Sunday School, Missionary Society and served where she was needed. More recently, she was appointed to be a member of the Mothers Board. Prior to her passing, she was the longest living member of Progressive Community Missionary Baptist Church.

In 1965 she was presented with the "New Advertiser Award" for Most Original Exterior. After thirty one hard working years with Lerner's, she decided to retire in 1978. She then lived the rest of her life as a retired self employed business owner.

Willie is also preceded in death by her granddaughter LaRonda Butler and niece Paula Farrar.

She is Survived by Anita Payne, Phyllis Butler and Tandy Coggs III (Godson). Willie was blessed to become a three time great grandmother. She has fourteen great grandchildren, thirty four great great grandchildren, nineteen great great great grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
